THE FIFA 2022 WORLD CUP STADUIM IN DOHA

In 2022 the FIFA World Cup (the international association football competition – “soccer” in the U.S.) will be held in Doha. Qatar is spending $260 billion on stadium construction for this event. Nepalese young men make up a majority of the work force responsible for the building all the venues for this event. Unfortunately investigations by the “International Labour Organisation” have found

  • Evidence of forced labor on the World Cup infrastructure project.

  • Workers being put up in deplorable conditions.

  • Some Nepalese men have alleged that they have not been paid for months and have had their salaries retained to stop them running away.

  • Some workers say employers routinely confiscate passports and refuse to issue ID cards, in effect reducing them to the status of illegal aliens.

  • Many have been denied access to free drinking water in the desert heat.  Workers have died at a rate of almost one per day.  They had sudden heart attacks because of the oppressive heat in the summer.  Temperatures in the summer average 106 degrees and often reach 115 and beyond.

  • Many Nepalese have sought refuge at their embassy in Doha to escape the brutal conditions of their employment.

  • After the devastating earthquake in Nepal the Qatari government blocked the Nepalese from returning home to their families to help and bury their dead.
