Qatar is a place where I felt very uncomfortable, and not totally because of the cultural differences.
Yes it did bother me about how women are treated there. But there was a general feeling of unfriendliness.
The only places we experienced smiling friendly people were when we visited markets and restaurants, all of which are owned by expatriates.
I am also quite disturbed by the general disregard for the quality of the lives of the people who have been giving so much of themselves to physically build this country.
When I travel I put the places into three categories:
1. Don't go
2. Go once
3. Go back many times.
Is Doha worth while visiting? The answer is yes, if only to see in person the amazing buildings and extravagance, but I would strongly recommend NOT to go until there has been a significant change in the human rights department.
I put Doha in category "2," go once.
