BARROW - Page 1
Barrow is the northern most populated city in the United States. When you stand on the shore there is no one in the world that it north of you.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 4,212 people residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 60.5% Alaska Native, 16.2% Caucasian, 0.9% African, 8.9% Asian, 2.3% Pacific Islander and 8.1% from two or more races. 3.1% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Before I left for Barrow I was able to get in touch with an Alaskan legislator from Barrow about visiting. He volunteered to give me a private tour around the area. He even took me to the KBRW “Top of the World Radio” radio studio where I was given a gift of a KBRW coffee cup.
Fortunately I was prepared for the cold and had on many layers as well as warming jells strategically placed all over my body. The sensation of walking on the street and my eyebrows beginning tickle as they immediately became frozen is an experience I never had before, totally enjoyed do not think I will ever forget.
One unfortunate thing is how climate change is effecting Barrow. Just take a look at the picture below. No words are necessary. It is heartbreaking.
The only paved road in the city is the airport runway. Most of the year the ground is very hard because of permafrost. Now the ground is getting softer and things can get very muddy.
