As I explained in the presentation part of this site, there are two types of markets in which the Cuban people can shop. The "peso" market, where most Cubans purchase their food, and the "CUC" market, where those who are able to obtain CUCs, the Cuban convertible peso, purchase food as well as other goods.
The markets that accept pesos are sparsely stocked with very little variety and low quality. Although prices are cheap as we view them, to the average Cuban these markets are critically needed since they cannot afford to shop in the CUC markets. Below is an example of a three peso CUC.
