Once the people of El Alto do get some money they proceed to build what they call Cholets (which comes from the Chalet). These houses are their versions of our Mac Mansion. They range in price from $250,000 to $600,000. Some of them have lower floors housing the family business while the top floors provide a home for its owners and others serve as total residences. They stand as striking symbols of Bolivia’s new Aymara bourgeoisie. It is really odd to see these huge, sometimes grotesque buildings standing in the middle of uncompleted, unfinished and unpainted smaller buildings. |
